Spoiler Warning!!
The episode starts with Aikawa Ayumu, a fairly average teenage boy with one main difference; He's a zombie! After being murdered by a serial killer he was brought back to life by the Necromancer Eucliwood Hellscythe and has become her servant. One night when hanging out in a graveyard, a calming activity for Ayumu, he witnesses and becomes involved in a fight between the chainsaw wielding Masou Shoujo Haruna and a large bear shaped demon called a Megalos. When she proceeded to attempt to sacrifice the trapped Ayumu in the battle.
Long story short he survives, she loses her powers and she becomes determined to stay in the human world until she regains them. eventually another Megalos comes around and confronts Ayumu, who gets an..."interesting" transformation sequence and proceeds to become a Masou Shoujo to defeat it.
Summary over. My thoughts? I came into this series expecting a decent time and some humor. I thought it'd be a nice way to kill some time, but boy was I surprised. This was a fantastic anime and is definitely my current favorite of the season. Be it the serious undertones of Ayumu's search for revenge, the spontaneity and insanity of the humor, the interesting combat, the characters everything is beautifully done. It's difficult to describe what exactly makes this anime good. I could say "everything", but that would sound forced and it certainly isn't perfect, but it's as good an anime as I've seen in the past few years and it's not a rehashing, new season, or imitation of any other previous series in addition to that. The zombie dynamic gives Ayumu serious context and motivation, but also allows him to be able to take the force of some of the most fatal slapstick comedy you can imagine without even breaking a sweat.
I can say for sure that I'll be continuing this series, especially if they keep future episodes up to par with this one. this is how a first episode should be done!
Side note: I love the OP and ED sequences. Seriously, they're not only beautifully done, but the songs are good, too. Here they are for your viewing pleasure:
